[ D’Artagnan shrugs. He doesn’t think it’s right that people who are in love have to keep themselves apart. He’s never cared much for the scandal, but he knows it’s there. Two people living together, as a couple, out of wedlock, would have been shocking for most of French society.

They’re lucky that no one cares here. If that changes in the future then you’re lucky, too. You’ll not be forced to stay with someone you don’t love, just because you’d be judged for it. I’d like to think society gets better than that, braver than that. Maybe it will.
