They’re lucky that no one cares here. If that changes in the future then you’re lucky, too. You’ll not be forced to stay with someone you don’t love, just because you’d be judged for it. I’d like to think society gets better than that, braver than that. Maybe it will.
[ Well, society would still have a thing or two to say about who she does love. But it's sweet that he's so passionate about it. ]

[ Maybe he hadn’t wanted to know. Maybe that was why Clary’s mother had left. All this time her friend, and he’d never known that about her. ]
[ She pulls a face, a little twist of her mouth before she shakes her head. ] No. He ... well, my mom thought he was dead. But he was kind of a huge evil dick so she ran away anyway, moved to a different country, had me.
Turns out he's not dead. [ She does a small, sarcastic little jazz hand. ] He's still an evil dick though. Kind of like if Dagger was your dad with the trying to kill you thing.
I don't really talk about it, it's okay. [ She shrugs, takes a sip of her water. ] He's not not that person to me. He's not family. My mom is. She was all I ever needed.
[ She's not used to having sympathy because of Valentine. It makes her look slightly surprised. ]
The people in charge, they don't trust me. I'm not one of them and when they look at me they see Valentine. It's worse for Jace, he holds himself like him. [ She sighs a little, glancing up at d'Artagnan. ] He convinced a lot of people to join him in this ... I guess you'd call it a cult. And they hurt a lot of people. Shadowhunters died because of him. And my mom, she ran away. She wanted to protect me and let us live normal lives. But he's back. And he ... he did something to her.
[ Glancing away. ] That's actually how the CDC got me in the first place. They said they could help. I didn't know what I was signing up for.
[ That’s what they’d told her. Or implied to her, which is almost worse. They’d made her believe that they could help her mother, and of course, she hadn’t thought of the cost. Neither had d’Artagnan, originally. No one imagines that they’re about to be required to destroy actual planets. That’s insane. What sort of person would that ever occur to?

What of the ordinary authorities in your world? Doctors, guards. Can’t they help? Are the Shadowhunters so completely separate?
I thought I was saving everyone. [ A small smile. ] Kind of dumb, right?
[ She snorts at his question, shaking her head a little. ] It's kind of like ... the real world, they can't see the one underneath? The Shadowhunters have been around since the Biblical days but unless you have some kind of magic in you, then you can't tell. So no. But I'll figure it out. I know I will.
[ She has to. Otherwise what's the point. ] I'm not going to let him win. Or the CDC. I don't care who I have to punch in the face to stop this.
[ Wanting to stop them, and wanting to hit someone. Take your pick. ]

[ He doesn't by any means want her to change her mind. He just doesn't want her to give them a reason to hurt her. D'Artagnan gets in trouble for that often enough. ]
[ D’Artagnan sees where she touches and he nods, agreeing. He wouldn’t even understand what she was saying without those earpieces. Not completely. His English is still piecemeal, and he imagines her French is much the same – if she speaks any at all. ]
[ She'd probably insult his mother on accident and considering d'Artagnan's reaction to that it wouldn't work in her favour. ]
