And my mom, she ran away. She wanted to protect me and let us live normal lives. But he's back. And he ... he did something to her.
[ Glancing away. ] That's actually how the CDC got me in the first place. They said they could help. I didn't know what I was signing up for.

What of the ordinary authorities in your world? Doctors, guards. Can’t they help? Are the Shadowhunters so completely separate?

The Shadowhunters have been around since the Biblical days but unless you have some kind of magic in you, then you can't tell. So no. But I'll figure it out. I know I will.
